Assessment in the Visual Arts

Formative & Summative Assessment.

The Visual art department conduct regular assessments of students work using a combination of Formative and Summative assessment methods.

  • Formative Assessment takes place every term and as/when final/main outcomes are completed. These assessments are recorded by the teacher and are used to inform periodic assessment reports.
  • Summative Assessment takes place within the classroom/lesson in the form of verbal feedback, suggestions for improvements and usually via activities that help students to 'reflect' on their own work/progress.

 Ks3 (Fauves/Yr7)

National Curriculum Levels

Typically the national average curriculum level for a student in Yr7: 4b. For most students that join the academy at the start of Yr7, the average NC Level is approximately 3a/4c.

At the beginning of the academic year all students are issued with a Level Tracking Sheet (LTS). Copies of 'typical LTS can be downloaded from the resource list (left). Each LTS is specific to individual students based on awarded levels gained after conducting a creative test in term 1. Although SATs, FFTMidYIS data sources are used to help generate 'initial' NC levels, assessing 'Creativity' is something that all of the above tests/data sources seem to lack.

Our test that students conduct during term 1 provides a clearer indication of our students 'creativity', and this is used to form students 'starting-at' NC Level within the Visual Arts.

Periodically, as/when assessments take place students receive an Assessment Feedback Sheet (AFS). This document helps students understand how the awarded level was reached by identifying a specific set of skills which are directly linked the National Curriculum Levels.

Students are expected to participate in the assessment process by identifying strengths/areas to develop and by setting personal targets to help move forward and strive to achieve higher levels in future work/assessments.
